About the Design of the Rainbow Room
-
Located on the top two floors of Rockefeller Center just across the street from Radio City Music Hall, The Rainbow Room was 'born' in 1934. Restaurateur Joseph Baum was chosen in 1986 to return the somewhat weary Rainbow Room to its former glory.
Robbins was pleased to join Baum's team for the project, architect Hugh Hardy and graphic artist Milton Glaser. Her assignment was to create uniforms which blended the sensibilities of both these artists, and which captured the sophistocated spirit of real thirties clothes, but with a contemporary eye.
The specific problems of creating elegant clothing for a high-end restaurant, the extremely heavy usage, the proximity to sauces and spirits, only made the job more challenging.
The Rainbow Uniform Program began with 500+ pieces. It opened to the Public in December of 1987.
