"A nice touch in the costume design was the absence of true whites among the Jewish characters. Only the uptown Americans sport the blinding whites often associated with the era -- the ever-present dancing couple, the pair of wheeler-dealers ready to make some greenbacks on the backs of the "greenhorns". Even Nathan, who tries so hard to assimilate right down to changing his name from Hershkowitz to Harris, is in the fine-tailored garb of the day -- but in cream, not white."
